Reawakening Celebration

The time has come for YBCA to reawaken our physical space, with a celebration on Friday, March 25 at 5:30 pm.

As you know, we’ve been far from dormant—we put our mission into hyperdrive with the Artist Power Center, the San Francisco Guaranteed Income Pilot for Artists (SF-GIPA), and a myriad of artist-led and community-focused initiatives by the YBCA 10, SF Urban Film Fest, Caleb Duarte, and more. After a number of obstacles kept us all at a distance, from the COVID-19 Omicron variant to repairing our building from a massive water leak, we are excited to finally open our doors at 701 Mission Street.

We’ve missed you. Plain and simple. So let’s celebrate with music, food, drinks, and dancing. Our gathering will ignite YBCA’s spaces and all the creative power we harness together.

The Healing Project by Samora Pinderhughes

We’re celebrating the opening of The Healing Project, an exhibition, musical album, and digital archive exploring the daily realities of violence, incarceration, detention, and policing in communities across the United States, and highlighting healing and care strategies that emerge from these same communities.

The YBCA 10 is a cohort of artists with whom YBCA is working in deep relationship to allow their creative practice to lead us towards a more equitable future.

Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal by Galería de la Raza

Studio 3 (Second Floor), All night

Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal, a new textile and photography exhibition, surveys Galería de la Raza’s work with the Caravan for the Children Campaign, demanding the release, reunification, and headline of immigrant children still in ICE custody.

Activating The Monument as Living Memory

Around the YBCA building, All night

Artist Caleb Duarte is activating his mural installation The Monument as Living Memory on 701 Mission Plaza with an indoor and outdoor procession by students from Oakland’s Fremont High School. Keep an eye out!

With music, food, drinks, and dancing, your presence ignites YBCA’s spaces and all the creative power we harness together.

We celebrate the people who are in the struggle every day and whose voices deserve to shine. The works displayed in our current exhibitions amplify artists speaking directly to real life issues affecting their communities. We know this means some content will be emotionally sensitive. Resilience includes acknowledging the pain alongside the joy.
