Galería de la Raza is pleased to present Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal, a survey exhibition of the Caravan for the Children Campaign (The Caravan).
In November of 2020, media reported that the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project’s attorneys were having difficulty establishing contact with parents of more than 600 migrant children that were separated as part of the 45th Presidential Administration’s 2018 Zero Tolerance Policy. When the Federal Government separated migrant children, in some cases they failed to gather the proper information to establish contact with parents or family. This willful neglect needed to be confronted and addressed.
The Caravan launched in January 2021, spearheaded by a coalition of well-established San Francisco Bay Area artists, advocates and community-based organizations. The Caravan coalition is led by CARECEN SF, Chicana/Latina Foundation, Galería de la Raza, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, and Latinx Racial Equity Project. This collaborative 100 day effort demanded the release, reunification, and healing of migrant children and sought to highlight this issue within President Biden’s Immigration Plan.
Through joyful imagery, song, and poetry we re-establish the humanity in migrant children and their families, and their right to freely move in their pursuit of happiness.
During the 100 days, coalition members lent their insight and expertise on current immigration policies, and health and healing practices, informing the advocacy efforts with local officials and legislators. The Caravan held delegation trips to the San Diego/Tijuana border and to Washington D.C. all while having an arts-centered, culturally relevant, and healing message throughout the process.
Entering its second year, The Caravan continues its call to uncage, reunify, and heal the migrant children that have been separated. Forcibly removing children from their families for economic or political gains has a historical precedent now being repeated and practiced at the U.S.–Mexico Border. Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal asks you to join in The Caravan’s efforts. Through joyful imagery, song, and poetry we re-establish the humanity in migrant children and their families, and their right to freely move in their pursuit of happiness.
