YBCA Teaching Artist Joyce Nojima will facilitate a series of 10 stand-alone, drop-in art workshops that are open to the public and welcome participants of all ages. Art materials will be provided, and participants will be able to take their artwork home as a souvenir. Each workshop will feature a different local artist and explore each artist’s practice and unique art-making method.

Inspired by artist Taravat Talepasand and Tate Kids, this activity will guide participants to brainstorm hopes of positive change, and apply that message or visual statement on paper.

In this activity, participants will create their own mini children’s book, and create pages for a community alphabet book. This workshop is inspired by artist Innosanto Nagara, the creator of YBCA’s Let’s Build from Here mural, who is also an activist, illustrator, and author of multiple progressive children’s books.

After learning more about the YBCA mural Tend Your Orchard created by artists Cece Carpio and Miguel “Bounce” Perez of Trust Your Struggle, participants will create their own paper flower garlands using colored and re-purposed paper, and embed messages of how to nurture their communities, loved ones, and themselves.

In celebration of the Japanese festival Obon, participants will create paper lanterns to honor their ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. This workshop is held in collaboration with YBCA’s Neighborhood Thought Partners: Balay Kreative, Bessie Carmichael Elementary and Middle Schools, Bindlestiff / Restorative Theater Arts for Seniors, California Lawyers for the Arts, Spotlight on the Arts, Filipino Community Development Corporation (FCDC), Galing Bata, SOMA Pilipinas, SOMCAN, TODCO Senior Arts Program, and United Playaz.

Inspired by the yōkai (supernatural beings and spirits) of Japanese folklore, participants will make their own yōkai out of colorful felt. This workshop will delve into the work of Bay Area artist Masako Miki, exploring her bright, fantastical soft sculptures and watercolors drawn from Japanese traditions.

Artist José Joaqin Figueroa documents his surroundings with his map-like drawings and paintings in playful detail. Inspired by Figueroa, participants will be guided to observe the world around them, and capture their findings in colored pencil and graphite.

Artist Charlene Tan weaves beads into patterns guided by spirituality, local flora and fauna, and Filipino identity. Participants will follow Tan’s art process by embellishing culturally and historically significant patterns with beads.

Inspired by artist Indira Allegra’s artwork TEXERE, we will learn to weave with paper. Participants are encouraged to bring personal images and writings that they would like to incorporate in their artwork, so as to carry on the traditions of storytelling through weaving.

With air-dry clay, participants are encouraged to make their own miniature cathedral mounds inspired by Bay Area artist Ashwini Bhat, and learn about the stores contained within Bhat’s sculptures and installations.

After learning about how artist Arleene Correa Valencia uses traditional Native Mexican textile work to share stories of undocumented communities in the U.S., participants will tell their own story in textiles through basic stitches, appliqué, and fabric glue.
