Distinct solo exhibitions with a shared history, Nicky Nodjoumi: The Personal is Political and Nahid Hagigat: Etched in Time together tell the story of a family of artists whose lives become inextricably linked to political revolution.

YBCA invites visitors to investigate their distinctive bodies of work: from Nodjoumi’s surreal and kaleidoscopic paintings of political power, to Hagigat’s evocative and intimate etchings about women and the ongoing struggle for freedom. Also on view are family photos and archival material, which shed light on the personal and political struggles that shaped their creative practices.

YBCA is also pleased to present A Revolution on Canvas, an accompanying HBO documentary produced by their daughter Sara Nodjoumi and her partner Till Schauder. The film examines the international controversy of 120 missing artworks in Tehran, which irreversibly changed this family’s life forever.

With multigenerational and multidisciplinary storytelling, the exhibition explores the fight for free expression, the dynamics of power, and how the search for home shapes the lives we lead.

We invite you to join us this fall to experience these bold and uncompromising artworks for yourself.
