The Godfather of Skate
David G. Miles, Jr., is the godfather of skate in San Francisco and the founder of the Church of 8 Wheels—a fellowship of people that celebrates life on wheels, eight wheels in particular. A roller disco set in the former Sacred Heart Church on Fillmore Street, they are bent on spreading “rolligion” (skating instructors are called apostles). The church once hosted the Black Panther Party Breakfast Program and a lettuce boycott by the United Farmworkers Union started there in 1970, so there’s wholesome history to skate to. Their purpose is to bring together those who rejoice in beauty and connection—and that loves life with wheels on their feet.
