Berkeley-based cellist and composer Theresa Wong, together with the violinist Carla Kihlstedt, will present The Unlearning in its West Coast premiere; the work combines music, theater, and the visual arts. Inspired by Goya’s Disasters of War etchings, Wong used 21 of Goya’s etchings as the basis for a set of gripping songs for voice, cello, and violin. The work questions whether war is a cycle that repeats itself or if it can be broken through deeper individual unlearning and learning. The music speaks to today’s currents of war and violence.
