Shih Chieh Huang creates sculptural ecosystems that embody a sense of playfulness and wonder. Using a combination of technological gadgetry-computer parts and LED lights–and everyday objects, such as plastic bags and bottles, he crafts lo-tech objects that are animated by simple mechanics. The machine aesthetic of the installations is tempered with an inclination towards the organic. Sculptures resembling biological specimens hang from the ceiling or wind their way across the floor. The aggregation of these sculptures forms a fantastical world that relies upon the presence of the viewer to come to life, activated as it is by motion sensor, thus making audience engagement an integral part of the work. In Synthetic Seduction, Huang gathers inspiration from marine biology, exploring the evolutionary adaptations of ocean dwellers. In particular, his interest in bioluminescence is foregrounded. Utilized in hunting prey, defending against predators, and attracting mates, this trait is characterized in the fluorescent, tentacled creatures that occupy an environment mimicking the deep sea. It is the last of the three activities especially, seduction and reproduction, that is played out in this wondrous realm of Huang’s making.
