GaHee Park: Behind the Curtain presents recent paintings that explore sexuality, mortality, fantasy, identity, and alienation through Park’s surrealist lens.
Quiet portraits of domestic solitude merge with uncanny still-lifes and gentle seaside landscapes, as Park inverts inner psychology and the outer world. Insects, snails, and sardines linger, while contemplative women peer into cocktail glasses—who is imagining who?
Subverting the viewer’s gaze while also troubling the traditional notion of subject, Park invites us to peek behind the curtain, as she lays claim to her own power as a surrealist painter working across fantasy and intimacy. Curated by Dorothy Dávila, GaHee Park: Behind the Curtain is the artist’s inaugural solo institutional exhibition in the U.S.
