The award-winning San Francisco hip hop dance theater company Embodiment Project returns to YBCA with the world premiere of X Rated Planet. This documentary hip-hop theater performance confronts the silencing of stigmatized experiences, which keeps sexual trauma a hidden epidemic, and explores myriad journeys to healing. Weaving together artistic director Nicole Klaymoon’s signature choreography, live music, poetry, and street dance traditions, X Rated Planet raises awareness, unites communities, and reclaims power.

Illustrated through the language of hip hop, breaking, popping, waacking, voguing, and house dance, X Rated Planet presents real stories sourced from within the Embodiment Project company and from interviews with formidable change makers: Dr. Joy Degruy, author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome; and Amikaeyla Gaston, founder of the International Cultural Arts and Healing Sciences Institute.

Featuring thirteen performers, the show highlights original live music created and performed by award-winning singers and activists Amikaeyla Gaston and adélàjà simon and interactive video art by Meena Murugesan. Focusing on radical joy and the victory of the human spirit, Embodiment Project engages a timely conversation around the root causes of sexual violence. This provocative work inspires reverence for and celebration of the innocence of children and the little one inside us all.

YBCA first commissioned Embodiment Project as part of the inaugural Transform Fest in 2017, a shared evening of local artists. The company has been featured several times as part of YBCA curated programs, and also performed at YBCA’s 25th anniversary celebration.
