Join us for a weekend of dynamic performances and participatory programs, as part of Art, Action, Change: YBCA Creative Corps Initiative.
All events are free and open to the public.
Screening Room & 701 Mission Street Plaza, Saturday, 12–3 PM
Explore the work of Creative Corp artist Maria de La Rose and DíaPaSón. Featuring a premiere of their short film La Lloroncita: Where Are My Children?, followed by a concert of original music and poetry inspired by their project with East Oakland residents. After the concert, participate in a fandango jam session, hosted by DíaPaSón.
Screening Room, Saturday, 3–5 PM
When it comes to the Black Panther Party, there’s one voice no one has heard from… until now! Come hear the adult children of the movement talk about what it was like to grow up in the Black Panther Party. Creative Corps artist Meres-Sia Gabriel hosts this panel followed by a Q&A.
Grand Lobby, Sunday, 1–3 PM
Organized by Creative Corps artist Brittany Tanner, you’re invited to join “Songs from the Stacks” a participatory musical event which uses music and sound healing to create songs from affirmations.
Engage in community dialogue, bear witness to one another’s struggles, change perspectives, and craft positive affirmations turning pain into power. Bring items that ground and comfort you like a journal or yoga mat as you journey through deep healing together and find remedy in a song.
Screening Room, Sunday, 3–5 PM
Featuring Creative Corps artist Meres-Sia Gabriel, “I Was There Too” is a multimedia spoken word and musical performance about one woman’s inner revolution as she struggles to understand what it means to have been born into the Black Panther Party.
Discover the intersection of art, action, and community empowerment at YBCA.
YBCA’s Creative Corps Initiative Exhibition and Public Programs are fully funded by the support of the California Arts Council.
