Since 1980, Zaccho Dance Theatre has advanced the aerial arts and site-specific dance by providing excellence in training, performance and education. Our culturally relevant programs explore history, current events, culture, architecture, and the concept of place, as opportunities to restore human dignity, belonging, and connectedness.

Founder and Executive Artistic Director Joanna Haigood has been the major architect of Zaccho’s vision for 45 years. Her choreography uses natural, architectural, and cultural environments and involves in-depth research into the history and character of performance sites as points of departure for movement exploration and narrative, commonly integrating aerial flight and suspension.

Zaccho Dance Theatre is the longest-running African American-led dance company in San Francisco, and the only professional dance company based in Bayview Hunters Point, a historically Black neighborhood. As a leader in this field, we value and embody artistic integrity, social consciousness, and deep community engagement and as such, Zaccho Studio – one of the largest in San Francisco – is utilized for rehearsals, performances, workshops, community events, social gatherings, and educational activities.
