efrén cruz cortés is a researcher in artificial intelligence and machine learning. e’s current focus is the analysis of social systems as they implement machine learning algorithms to automate their decision making process. in particular, the (un)ethical use of these algorithms as well as the disparate effects they have on different populations, being beneficial for some and extremely detrimental for most. e studies the properties that emerge as a result of these automatization mechanisms, often of an undesirable nature, for example, the reproduction of harmful social structures like classism, racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination hiding under the guise of “objectivity”. e engages with art and performance to bring academic work to a larger audience and to challenge our rotten econo-political system from an aesthetic perspective.
