Vaughn Sadie was born in 1978 in Heidelberg, South Africa, and currently lives and works in Johannesburg. He is a conceptual artist and educator with a particular interest in the role and function that artificial light has on our perception of the spaces we occupy, and how light can be both an object and a medium. Sadie has developed a body of work that explores collaborative practices as a strategy for developing and responding to public space, including a website that maps the streetlights of the city of Johannesburg as a means of developing an alternative way of perceiving and engaging with the city. In 2011, he collaborated with Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre on the creation of Inhabitant, which enabled him to explore the impact of artificial light on the body as it moves through urban spaces. He has participated in a number of exhibitions throughout South Africa at such venues as Goethe on Main, Johannesburg (2012 and 2011), AVA Gallery, Cape Town (2010, 2009, and 2007), Bank Gallery, Durban (2009 and 2008), and KZNSA Gallery, Durban (2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2003), among others. In 2012, Sadie was a finalist in MTN New Contemporaries and was listed as one of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 South Africans.
