Wednesdays, October 11–November 29, 2–4 PM
YBCA Teaching Artist Joyce Nojima will facilitate a series of stand-alone, drop-in art workshops that are open to the public and welcome participants of all ages. Art materials will be provided, and participants will be able to take their artwork home as a souvenir. Each workshop is inspired by work from a different artist highlighted in the Bay Area Now 9 exhibition at YBCA and explores each artist’s practice and unique art-making method.

Be inspired by artist Charlene Tan’s weaving of mylar strips into patterns guided by spirituality, local flora and fauna, and Filipino identity. Participants will follow Tan’s art process by embellishing culturally and historically significant patterns with fabric.

Reflecting on Michael Arcega’s past installation Nacireman Inventions: Cultural Phonemes. In this piece Arcega created a series of small polymer clay forms inspired by netsuke. Netsuke is a Japanese tradition of making ornate miniature sculptures used as fasteners on cords originating in the 17th century. In this workshop, participants will create mini sculptures of our everyday objects using polymer clay.

In this workshop participants will follow Trina Michelle Robinson’s photopolymer intaglio works on handmade paper. Robinson documents her labor intensive papermaking process which are sourced specifically from Black-owned farms in North Carolina. After learning about her work, participants will go over the basics of printmaking and create their own prints.

In a recent solo exhibition Banana Philosophy, Christine Tien Wang exhibited a series of portrait paintings reflecting on her personal experience as American-born Chinese. For this workshop, participants will be going over the basics of portraiture and learning to create their own self-portrait inspired by Christine Tien Wang’s process.

Chelsea Ryoko Wong painting compositions reflect the diversity and style of her home in San Francisco. Participants of this workshop are invited to pull inspiration from Chelsea Ryoko Wong’s artwork to make their own painted celebration of their community.
