Material Cinema Workshop

Saturday, December 2, 2023, 12–5 PM

Learn how to repurpose castaway mid-century 16mm film through scratching, painting, puncturing, boiling, bleaching, and more in this hands-on material cinema bonanza with filmmaker Ellie Vanderlip. Participants will review various “destructive” methods and examples and then jump into experimenting themselves, with each student creating their own sample reel of techniques to take home. Film and art materials will be provided. This workshop is crafted for both those who are new to these processes and those who are interested in deepening their knowledge.

Note: There will be short breaks and small snacks provided throughout the workshop. Participants are invited to pack a lunch and non-alcoholic beverages if desired.

Ellie Vanderlip

Ellie Vanderlip is an experimental filmmaker based in San Francisco, CA. She works primarily with found media to explore topics around climate change, infrastructure, and California history and identity.

Shapeshifters Cinema

Shapeshifters Cinema is an experimental microcinema located in Oakland, CA. Their mission is to provide a venue and support for contemporary artists working with experimental and artist-made film, video, sound, music, and other types of mediated performance. They host regular live events, offer workshops on experimental moving image and sound production, and operate a storefront shop specializing in print publications, DVDs, sound recordings, and other artist-made media.

Gina Basso

Gina Basso is a San Francisco-based independent film programmer of experimental, artist-made, and non-fiction film and video works and thematic narrative film series. She has organized film programs for local cinemas including The Roxie Theater, The Castro Theater, and Alamo Drafthouse New Mission Theater. She has curated programs for McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, Design Within Reach, Hunter’s Point Shipyard and the Northwest Film Forum and is the former film curator for San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In her creative practice, she uses video to explore transitional or altered states of being. Through moving collage, handmade animation, and sound she draws on a rich tradition of experimentation with various forms, materials, and processes, combining found and original footage to harness the energy of poetic montage. Her video work has been presented at CROSSROADS Festival, Artist Television Access, HAXAN Film Festival, and Antimatter Experimental Film Festival.

Bay Area Now 9 is curated by Martin Strickland, Director of Curatorial Initiatives, and Fiona Ball, independent curator; under the artistic leadership of Amy Kisch, Head of Art + Public Programming; and developed with the inaugural YBCA Curatorial Counsel of curators, artists, activists, and cultural workers working across the Bay Area’s creative disciplines and communities: Erina Alejo, Gina Basso, Jason Bayani, Mina Girgis, Candace Huey, José Ome Navarrete Mazatl, Aay Preston Myint, and Lehua Taitano.
