For Creative Corps artists Jesse Johnson and Christiana “Versoul” Roverso, San Francisco’s Tenderloin is the community they call home and the place that inspires their work. On Thursday, September 12, we invite you for a screening of two documentary films: This is My Story, Tenderloin, by Roverso followed by Discovering a Different Sky, by Johnson and Zach Sexton.

This is My Story, Tenderloin follows five artists located in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, inviting viewers to see it through the artists’ eyes. The film bears witness to the beauty within the rubble and shows the diverse melting pot of the Tenderloin. Discovering a Different Sky portrays the Tenderloin and its community from the perspective of those who call it home. This 20 minute documentary interweaves Jesse Johnson’s Mine is a Community of Misfits and Outlaws with personal stories of Tenderloin residents who have been able to uplift, heal, and build community in a neighborhood that is a containment zone and a refuge for the disenfranchised.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Art, Action, Change: YBCA’s Creative Corps Initiative, on view at YBCA through September 15.
