Community Weaving Workshop

With Charlene Tan and Bleu Di Base | 5–8 PM

Contribute to a large-scale weaving artwork featured in Bay Area Now 9! Led by BAN9 artist Charlene Tan, participants will be guided through weaving patterns inspired by traditional indigenous Filipino design. This collaborative work will help co-create Tan’s Research and Remembering installation, an immersive woven structure that celebrates the visual language of Filipinx textile.

COLOR IN TWELVE PARTS: 1–6 Film Screening

5–9 PM

This series of newly-commissioned color-focused films is a collection of experimental, process-based commentaries on ritual and recordation that build on Leah Rosenberg’s decade-long observational work of color collecting. Across February 2024, The Color of Life comprises a series of 12 monochromatic videos/films that pull colors from all parts of life and bring them to you daily, one color at a time. This presentation brings together the first six colors in the series, partnered with two pop-up activations of improvised sound performance from John Davis and Famous Techno (Kim West). Films continue to play before and between activations. This activation is part of BAN9 Film, curated by Gina Basso.

Sip & Sketch

Grab your sketching tool of choice, your beverage of choice, and a seat for Sip & Sketch with Bay Area Now 9 artist José Figueroa. Figueroa will offer prompts and invitations to approaches for you to consider in your sketches, while also inviting you to follow your own muse and practice. Drop in at any time and stay as long as you’d like.

Ritual Repair Weaving Workshop

With April Camlin | Join at one of three start times: 6 or 7 PM

Learn some basic tapestry weaving techniques and discover how to transform your personal materials into threads in a Ritual Repair Weaving Workshop inspired by and based on a concept from BAN9 artist Indira Allegra. Bring some of your personal materials that represent an old version of yourself—like used clothing, letters, jewelry, or prescription bottles—to add to a collective tapestry. Through the act of weaving, what once represented loss can be transmuted into a wish, hope, or prayer for healing.

TNT Traysikel: SideNotes

With Michael Arcega, Paolo Asuncion, and Rachael Lastimosa | 6–9 PM

Climb inside the TNT Traysikel—a hand-built, hand-painted, life-size sculpture of a motorcycle with a sidecar—and share your personal story of immigration and family history with the artists. The interactive sculpture is both a cultural signifier for immigrants in America, and a catalyst for conversation, as the artists collect stories and record histories as SideNotes.

With Zekarias Musele Thompson | 7 PM Meet in Gallery 2

Experience recently unveiled public artworks on the YBCA campus through a procession-style performance by artist Zekarias Musele Thompson. Visit the works of Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, Leila Weefur, Masako Miki, Indira Allegra, and Jeffrey Cheung, currently on view at YBCA, to dive into the artists’ insights on architectures of healing, and human interconnectivity.

In Thompson’s work, spatial facilitation, a term of art in physiology, refers to stimuli that contribute to the accurate processing of visual information. That is to say, there are certain things that we see, that help us see more precisely. Thompson’s spatial facilitation is an ongoing project, mapping clearer vision through walking, noticing, the breath, and the saxophone. ANALOG SOLUTIONS FOR ANALOG PROBLEMS.

Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries music set

8 PM

To close out the evening, Fresno punk band Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries will take the stage to perform a set of anthemic queercore punk rock. Consisting of members Amber Fargano, Vishinna Turner, Audrey Paris Johnson, Victoria Crow, and Staci McDowell, their music has been celebrated as “mixing bold and colorful looks and dance moves with upbeat punky harmonies.” The group is also a source of inspiration for BAN9 artist Craig Calderwood, who has designed album artwork for the band.
