For artists William Rhodes and Tarika Lewis, the history and narratives of the African American community in San Francisco are the inspirational lifeblood of their work. On Thursday, August 22, we invite you for a documentary screening of Blood Seeks Blood, a film by Lewis followed by a presentation of the Narrative Quilt Project by Rhodes.
Over the past year, Rhodes hosted a series of quilt workshops and interviews with seniors in Bayview/Hunters Point. Through this process, he uncovered the history and narratives of African Americans who migrated to San Francisco in the 1940s and 1950s to work at the Hunters Point Shipyard. Lewis, an accomplished historian, was asked a simple question by a family member, “You talk so much about history, but do you even know who you are?” The question prompted her to dive into her own genealogy and has inspired other African Americans to do the same. Over the past year, Lewis has hosted genealogy workshops and guided members of her community to take a journey through their genetic history. Join us to uncover the work of two artists focused on family and community histories.
