YBCA Teaching Artist ChiChai Mateo will facilitate a series of stand-alone, drop-in art workshops that are open to the public and welcome participants of all ages. Art materials will be provided, and participants will be able to take their artwork home. For this series, each workshop will be inspired by the Parol Lantern Festival – the quintessential Filipinx symbol of hope, blessings, and luck during the holiday season. These workshops are a celebration with YBCA’s community partner, SOMA Pilipinas and the Filipino Heritage District.
Inspired by Filipino parol lanterns, participants will create papercut pattern collages evoking concepts of hope, goodwill, blessings, and luck during the holiday season. Like parol lanterns, which are typically hung by windows, these pieces can be displayed near windows where they can interact with light and shadow. This workshop is inspired by the Parol Lantern Festival, hosted by YBCA’s community partner SOMA Pilipinas.
