Shimabuku is fascinated with the natural world and explores simple, often overlooked things in order to make the familiar strange and to draw attention to the extraordinary within the ordinary. His work encourages the audience to break with established habits and to enjoy experiences as if for the first time. One of his most well-known works is Then, I decided to give a tour of Tokyo to the Octopus from Akashi (2000), where he documented his journey with a live octopus from the fishermen´s village of Akashi to Tokyo. Shimabuku’s work has been shown in the following venues: the Taipei Biennial (2014), the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2014), Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, England (2013), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (2013), DAAD galerie Berlin (2007), and the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan (2007).
