Peter Hutton, born in 1944 in the United States, is an experimental filmmaker, artist, and cinematographer who has spent nearly forty years voyaging the globe, frequently by cargo ship. His work has covered such diverse landscapes as northern Iceland, the Yangtze River, and the Polish city of Łódź. Hutton graduated from San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied painting, sculpture, and film. He has taught filmmaking at CalArts, Harvard University, SUNY Purchase, and other institutions. Currently he is the director of the Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College. In 2008 the Museum of Modern Art, New York, held a full retrospective of his films.
