Megumi Matsubara creates spatial compositions that explore the boundaries of presence and absence. She works individually as an artist and collectively as an architect through Assistant, an international & interdisciplinary design practice that she co‐founded with Hiroi Ariyama in 2002. Based on an architectural approach and inspired by urban conditions, her practice traverses diverse media, including sculpture, sound, photography and text. Her independent and collaborative work has been exhibited in Japan, Morocco, France, Korea, Germany, Kenya, Egypt, and the United States. Matsubara studied in Japan and the UK, and since 2012 has lived and worked between Tokyo and Fez, Morocco.
