Maria Theresa Alves is a Brazilian artist and the co-founder of the Green Party of Brazil. She describes her work as an inquiry into the social circumstances that we take for granted, researching how we identify ourselves and the things around us. Through the development of site-specific works, her practice addresses social histories and the environment creating a discursive platform that engages local community members, civic officials, cultural producers, and so on. Alves has participated in dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel, Germany (2012), Biennial de São Paulo (2010), the Biennale de Lyon (2009), Manifesta 7, Trento, Italy (2008), and the Guangzhou Triennial (2008). She is also a contributor of the FORMER WEST project.
