Launched by the artists Mitch Trale and Jacob Broms Engblom in Oakland in 2012, Idle Screenings streams art to thousands of desktops daily through a custom screen-saver app. Trale and Engblom regularly commission original video works from artists worldwide to produce screen savers that stream to Idle Screenings users. The screen saver exhibitions explore value within an “attention economy” by presenting work to audiences that may or may not exist in vacant rooms, at the expense of other resources, such as energy, bandwidth, and time.
