San Francisco native Elana Cooper (b. 1973) is best known for her whimsical yet serious flower portraits, which pay tribute to her subjects in a highly personal way. Drawing from her collection of flower images labeled with their Latin names, Cooper has created her modern floral silhouettes with ink, watercolor, acrylic, animation, and even 3-D cutout sculptures. Her most commonly recognized works are painted in thick, bold strokes, the background in one color and the subject in a contrasting color, giving her representational work an abstract quality and graphic visual power.
Cooper’s floral silhouettes have been licensed for products at Open Editions and Pottery Barn. In 2021, she was commissioned to create a series of large-scale public murals by State Bird Provisions. Cooper has exhibited in over twenty group shows, including Et al., Root Division, the Museum of Craft and Design, and OMCA. In 2024, Cooper presented her first solo exhibition, Flower Power.
