Spring Performance Season - 2019
Co-presented with San Francisco Performances

YBCA welcomes back YBCA100 honoree Michelle Dorrance with the San Francisco premiere of the celebrated ETM: Double Down project, which celebrates the extreme mobility of the percussive body, combining rhythm with interactive electronic music technology in a perfect fusion of movement and sound featuring an incredible cast of 8 amazing tap dancers and 3 musicians playing live. An exciting visual and auditory polyphony from a cabaret that merges modernity and tradition. Using original tap “instruments” designed by 2014 Bessie Award Winner Nicholas Van Young, the score is not simply danced to, but danced BY the company. With the right programming, the sound of a single footfall can range from a snare drum to a note on an arpeggio.

Choreography by Michelle Dorrance and Nicholas Van Young, with Ephrat Asherie, and solo improvisation by the dancers
Original Music by Gregory Richardson, Nicholas Van Young, Donovan Dorrance, Aaron Marcellus, Warren Craft, with Michelle Dorrance
Additional Music by Adele, The Knife, Bon Iver, Patrick Watson
Lighting Design by Kathy Kaufmann
Costume Design by Amy Page

Dorrance Dance aims to honor tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new, dynamic, and compelling context; not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it: rhythmically, aesthetically, and conceptually. Founded in 2011 by Artistic Director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow and 2018 Doris Duke Fellow, Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance's inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” The company has since performed at Jacob’s Pillow, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, New York City Center's Fall For Dance Festival, Danspace Project, Fira Tarrega, Spoleto Festival USA, The Yard, The Broad Stage, Symphony Space, Carolina Performing Arts' Memorial Hall, for White Bird in Portland’s Schnitzer Hall, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and tap dance festivals throughout the world, all to rave reviews.
