The Grammy award-winning Boys Chorus was founded by Gaetano Merola and Madi Bacon in 1948 to provide trained singers for SF Opera. Today Ian Robertson leads SFBC and is also Chorus Director at the Opera. Since his arrival in 1996, he has built SFBC to over 200 singers from 50 Bay Area cities rehearsing in San Francisco, Oakland, San Rafael, and San Mateo.
SFBC appears throughout the Bay Area singing at A’s games, Union Square, City Hall and numerous community events. During the holidays, the Chorus has appeared on KQED-TV for 13 years. The boys have also sung with the Opera, Symphony, Ballet, Midsummer Mozart, Robert Moses’ Kin Dance Company, and the Great Wall Youth Orchestra.
The Chorus tours extensively, having performed at Carnegie Hall, the Obama inauguration and many US cities. It has sung in England, France, Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Russia, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Costa Rica and Australia.
