About the Role

The Facilities Director oversees the operational assets and business practices that ensure successful delivery of YBCA’s programs and its strategic priorities. Primary responsibilities include operating, repair, maintenance, and capital replacement of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts facilities, physical assets, equipment, buildings and grounds. The department includes Facilities Associate Manager (1), Facilities Coordinator (1), Lead Facilities Tech (1), Facilities Tech (1), Public Safety & Security Supervisor (1), and Security Guards (variable).

This is a vital role within the organization,that directly enables YBCA to plan and execute the programs, initiatives, and events that fulfill our mission. This is a high-visibility role that collaborates with YBCA leadership to make our campus safe, inspiring, and inclusive.

Principal Responsiblities

Building Systems, Planning and Maintenance:

  • Ensure that YBCA physical assets are maintained in a way that provides a clean, safe, and effective environment that meets the organization’s programs, mission, vision and budget.
  • Manage all aspects building systems including HVAC, electrical, conveyance, building envelope, plumbing and other building systems.
  • Create and manage a preventive maintenance program for all facility equipment.
  • Oversee Cleaning and Maintenance of Facility
  • Ensure institutional compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations and/or YBCA policy

Capital Planning and Improvement Projects:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain an organization wide short and long-term capital asset management, maintenance and replacement plan.
  • Ensure that all building alterations, capital projects and construction are performed in accordance with building standards, local code requirements.

Staff Supervision:

  • Determines best operating structure for facilities and security team to meet the organization’s needs and goals.
  • Provides leadership, direction, supervision and motivation to the Facilities and Security staff.

Safety, Security and Training Programs:

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s safety, security and monitoring programs & training initiatives for the staff and public.  Including injury Illness prevention plan, emergency evacuation plan, security procedures, fire prevention, OSHA requirements, Safety Committee, 24 hour alarm systems  etc.

Relationship Management

  • Act as primary liaison with fire, police and inspection officials for overall building related manners.  Provides leadership and support to onsite visitor services, events team and artistic departments who are directly responsible for compliance management and safety during events and onsite programs.
  • Serve as Center’s primary contact for loss prevention compliance.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with Yerba Buena Gardens Building Ownership and Property Management for facilities/building-related issues and long term capital planning and projects.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership and other departments regarding facilities support for programs and events.

Vendor Management:

  • Plan, bid, approve and manage numerous building and maintenance service contracts and vendor relationships.

Budget Management:

  • Develops and manages facility departmental budget and long term capital budget

Minimum Requirements
  • 5-10 years in the maintenance trade in a large campus with multiple buildings/spaces.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry, computerized building management systems (CMMS), building codes and laws
  • Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of contracts and vendor management
  • Knowledge of budget analysis and development
  • Management skills/experience with a unionized and non unionized workforce
  • Ability to delegate responsibility
  • Excellent organizational skills with particular attention to detail and process, and comfort managing multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate across all levels of an organization and with outside vendors and the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultural background.
  • Ability to work occasional nights, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Ability to work well independently; proven resourcefulness and a problem solver
  • Basic computer skills
Physical Demands

Position will include a large amount of walking between buildings and on event sites and is on his/her feet consistently.  Ability to lift 50 pounds.  Ability to perform routine bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
