About the Workshop:
YBCA partners with artist Rafael Casal (Blindspotting, 2018) to present a single-week intensive Bay Area workshop, inspired by the month-long #BARS Workshop lab series at the Public Theater in New York. Created by Casal and Daveed Diggs, the #BARS Workshop is a space for artists to investigate and develop their craft at the intersection of contemporary verse and theater. The #BARS Workshop has been punctuated by several installments of a video series called the #BARS MIXTAPE MUSICAL MEDLEY which has received high praise from Elle, Time, Entertainment Weekly, Teen Vogue, Slate, NPR, Broadway.com, Huffington Post, Time Out New York, Playbill and more. The #BARS Workshop has grown to a company of over 60 alumni who are championing stages on and off Broadway, national tours, and throughout film and television.
In June 2020, YBCA will present the world premiere of Rafael Casal’s The Limp, a new performance piece at the intersection of musical theater, spoken word, and hip hop-driven narrative. Casal and his artistic collaborators will use the piece to talk honestly about how outdated paradigms of masculinity give rise to sexual harassment, abuse, and violence.
