The latest Room for Big Ideas installation, Reimagine: That Which We Know But Don’t Realize, explores the ways in which we simultaneously create and conceal meaning in landscapes, and how that process defines us in relation to our environment.

The work of David Shrigley effortlessly infuses a comedic sensibility into a serious fine art practice. David Shrigley: Brain Activity showcases the diversity of the artist’s work — amateurish, crude drawings, hand-crafted sculptures made of unusual materials, and installations characterized by incongruities of scale — offering insightful and often surreal commentary on the absurdities of life, death and everything in between. Irreverent and mischievous, Shrigley’s art presents the kind of odd scenarios you never come across in real life, but wish you did.

In war-torn medieval Japan, a demon haunts the Rajomon Gate, ripping out the throats of samurai in the grove beyond. The governor sends a war hero to confront the spirit, but what the man finds are two beautiful women who look just like his lost mother and wife. Both a chilling ghost story and a meditation on the nature of war and social hypocrisy, Kuroneko mixes stunning visuals, an evocative score, and influences from traditional Japanese theater to create an emotionally devastating work. Lamplighters open their 60th Season with Gilbert & Sullivan’s greatest hit The Mikado. A playful tale set in a make-believe Japanese town where flirting is a capital offence, The Mikado is actually a satire on Victorian British society. Nanki-Poo has fallen in love with the beautiful Yum-Yum, fiancée to the Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko. When the Mikado, emperor of Japan, demands the execution of Ko-Ko, and Nanki-Poo volunteers to take Ko-Ko’s place under the condition that he first be allowed to marry Yum-Yum, chaos, desperation, and comical mayhem ensue.

Live orchestra, gorgeous sets and costumes, and the amazing voices of the Lamplighters — considered one of the best Gilbert & Sullivan producers in the world!

    (Walnut Creek, July 27-29 / Napa, August 4-5 / Mountain View, August 11-12 / Livermore, August 25-26)
