    Room for Big Ideas

YBCA welcomes Bay Area photographer and installation artist Derick Ion to the Room for Big Ideas. His installation transforms the RBI into a meditative and sensual environment rich in symbology, Jainist iconography, and Subcontinental texture. Complementing and contrasting YBCA's large first floor exhibition, The Matter Within: New Contemporary Art of India, the ephemera and minutiae displayed in Ion's space reflect another contemporary – and timeless – perspective on India.

Castaneda/reiman investigates the treatment of the outdoors within interior domestic spaces; challenges artistic notions of display, especially as they relate to painting and sculpture; and plays with ideas of simulacra and simulation.

Liss Fain Dance’s The False and True Are One is a performance installation. The dancers, the actor speaking the imagistic and witty short stories of Lydia Davis and the audience are surrounded by an architecturally designed set of translucent screens by Matthew Antaky and an immersive sound environment composed by Dan Wool. Drawing on different perceptions and images of the same event, The False and True Are One is seen from multiple perspectives — the audience moves freely between the four delineated areas of the set, or watches from the theater seats. Their presence in the set — walking, standing or shifting focus — adds a final layer of unpredictability and intimacy. For more information, visit www.lissfaindance.org

This evening of sumptuous dancing, explosive Taiko, and delicious fun celebrates the history of Krissy Keefer's Dance Brigade — from The Wallflower Order Dance Collective of the 1970's, to what is the Dance Brigade organization of today. Dance Brigade is known for the fierce inventiveness and deft comic touch in which it explores the intersection between art and social issues. With reprises of Great Liberation Upon Hearing and other iconic dances, we trace the journey of what was one the nation's first feminist dance companies.

This performance is supported by Dancers' Group's New Stages for Dance program.
