    Room for Big Ideas

YBCA welcomes Bay Area photographer and installation artist Derick Ion to the Room for Big Ideas. His installation transforms the RBI into a meditative and sensual environment rich in symbology, Jainist iconography, and Subcontinental texture. Complementing and contrasting YBCA's large first floor exhibition, The Matter Within: New Contemporary Art of India, the ephemera and minutiae displayed in Ion's space reflect another contemporary – and timeless – perspective on India.

Castaneda/reiman investigates the treatment of the outdoors within interior domestic spaces; challenges artistic notions of display, especially as they relate to painting and sculpture; and plays with ideas of simulacra and simulation.

Javon Jackson with Mulgrew Miller, Jimmy Cobb & Peter Washington
    SFJAZZ Members Only

Tenor mastermind Javon Jackson’s project focusing on John Coltrane-associated compositions features a quartet of veteran masters with close professional and spiritual ties to Trane. Since emerging from apprenticeships with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and longtime Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones, Jackson has transcended his “young lion” status to become a veteran composer and bandleader. Drummer Jimmy Cobb collaborated extensively with Coltrane during their years as Miles Davis sidemen, appearing together on the epochal album Kind of Blue. Prodigious pianist Mulgrew Miller spent six years with drummer Tony Williams and has become a potent leader himself, with nearly two dozen albums to his credit. And Peter Washington, another former Jazz Messenger, is a brilliant bassist whose vast discography includes hundreds of sessions. This event is open to SFJAZZ Members only. Visit sfjazz.org for information about membership.
